YEAR IN REVIEW
AVON, Dec. 1 -- Avon (1-9) may not have had much success on the gridiron in 2002 when it came to wins and losses, but the season was still a special one to Joe Friedhoff and his teammates. "We're a group of guys who like to play football," he said. "Everyone on this team likes to play football, hit hard and work hard." Friedhoff earned All-Nutmeg League honors as a defensive back.

Off-season news
Quinion takes over Falcons
AVON, June 5, 2003 -- Brett Quinion was named the new head coach of the Avon High football team in mid-May. He is the seventh head coach in the program's history. Quinion, a former AHS player in the 1970s under Glenn McLellan, has spent the past four years working as an assistant coach at Bristol Eastern High. Spring workouts began on June 2 and last two weeks. Ed Swicklas, a former Eastern head coach, will be Quinion's defensive coordinator. Sean Coles, David Olsen and Bill Brown comprise the remainder of the staff.

Jamieson honored as Scholar-Athlete
SOUTH WINDSOR, May 10, 2003 -- Dan Jamieson was honored as a Scholar Athlete at the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame's 37th annual Northern Connecticut chapter Scholar-Athlete dinner in South Windsor. He was one of 14 boys to be honored.

St. Paul will be back
BRISTOL, May 19, 2003 -- St. Paul/Goodwin Tech will field a football team this fall but boosters need to raise $32,000 to keep the program going, the Hartford Courant reported. The Falcons have seven games lined up at the moment but St. Paul coach Joe Cefaratti said opponents are working to fit St. Paul back into their schedules. St. Paul will compete as an independent.

St. Paul drops football
BRISTOL, March 19, 2003 -- St. Paul has dropped football the school's athletic director confirmed Tuesday. The Bristol school ran a co-op program with Goodwin Tech but low numbers and no commitment on funds from the state, which funds Goodwin Tech, helped accelerate the demise of the program.

Feshler steps down as coach
AVON, Feb. 6, 2003 -- Avon's Tim Feshler has stepped down as coach of the Falcon football team for the second time to spend more time with his family. He was 9-22-1 during the past three years with the Falcons, including a 1-9 record this past fall.
Feshler also coached at AHS in 1992 and 1993, when he led the Falcons to a 6-4 record -- the best mark in past 13 years. He finishes with a career record of 16-24-1 in Avon. Feshler had previously coached at Xavier-Middletown.

FARMINGTON, Nov. 22 -- Farmington's Brandon Willard, who ran for a state single-game record of 508 yards last week against Plainville, rushed for 169 yards on 31 carries and scored 2 TDs as the Indians (5-4-1) outlasted Avon in the rain and mud at FHS. Ben Lerer had a 19-yard interception return while Joe Friedhoff had a 31-yard TD run late in the fourth quarter for the Falcons (1-9).

AVON, Nov. 21 -- Avon forced five Farmington turnovers, including a 49-yard interception return by Mike Puglielli, as the AHS Developmental team beat the Indians, 22-8 in the season finale. Avon (8-2) won four of its final five games. The Falcons beat NW Catholic for win No. 7 by a 35-0 score as Chris Prudhomme threw 3 TD passes. Puglielli scored 2 TDs and Travis Bracken had 2 TD catches,

FHS game now at night
FARMINGTON, Oct. 25 -- The season-ending clash at rival Farmington has been moved to Friday night, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. FHS has just completed installation of permanent lights at the high school and will host three night games this fall. It will be the fifth game of the season under the lights for the Falcons.

NW Catholic 33, Avon 20
WEST HARTFORD, Nov. 16 -- On a cold, wet Saturday morning, Tim Bourdon completed 14 of 26 passes for 176 yards and two touchdowns as Northwest (6-4, 6-3 Nutmeg) defeated visiting Avon. Bourdon also ran for 70 yards on 12 carries. Max Martinez caught a pair of TD passes in the fourth quarter for Avon.

MIDDLETOWN, Nov. 8 -- Dave Francis scored two TDs, including one on a 51-yard pass from Todd Manjuck to lead Vinal Tech/Coginchaug to a 16-10 win Friday night at Palmer Field. Vinal (1-7, 2-7) took over after recovering a punt that deflected off an Avon player. Tom Canty had a 29-yard TD run for the Falcons, who also received a 25-yard field goal from Chris McLellan. Vinal intercepted five Avon passes.

AVON, Nov. 2 -- Plainville scored three touchdowns in four minutes to earn its first victory of the season. A blocked punt, interception and fumble doomed the Falcons in that span. QB Ben Lerer completed nine passes for 134 yards. Max Martinez caught 4 passes for 86 yards. Matt Friedhoff had one interception for AHS.

AVON, Oct. 26 -- The visiting Dragons may have been missing three starters suspended earlier during the day but Middletown still had 11 players on the field for each play when they squared off against Avon. And on the field is where the game was decided.

Avon forced five Middletown turnovers, including a 37-yard interception return by Max Martinez, to stun the Dragons, 18-13 and win its first game of the season. Avon's Joe Friedhoff scored a pair of touchdowns (4 yards, 1 yards) as Avon beat Middletown for the first time since 1983, breaking a 10-game Dragon win streak over the Falcons.

The Middletown High coaching staff did the right thing by suspending 3 starters hours before its game with Avon, even though it probably cost the Dragons a victory. (Middletown Press, 11/1)

ROCKY HILL, Oct. 19 -- Mike McMann scooped up a fumble and returned it 54 yards for the game's first touchdown but the Falcons couldn't add anything else in a hard-fought loss to Rocky Hill in the first game ever between the two schools on Saturday night.

The game was tied 6-6 late in the second quarter before the Terriers took the halftime lead on a late touchdown. Four second-half turnovers hurt the Falcons, who were led by halfback Joe Friedhoff (11 carries, 105 yards).

AVON, Oct. 5 -- Joe Friedhoff ran for a hard-earned 72 yards and scored on a 15-yard touchdown run with 1:01 left in the fourth quarter but East Catholic/Cheney Tech spoiled Homecoming with a 35-6 Nutmeg League victory under the lights. He also returned three kicks for a total of 39 yards. It was Avon's first night home game since 1997 when they beat Tolland, 16-12, on Oct. 10, 1997.

AVON, Oct. 2 -- Friends of Avon Football have developed a Web site that includes action photos from selected games this season.

Enfield 14, Avon 7
AVON, Sept. 28, 2002 -- Ben Lerer had two interceptions and Tom Canty played well on defense but the Falcons (0-3) couldn't get their offense on track. Lou Shavell scored the only points for Avon on a 65-yard fumble return late in the fourth quarter. Chris Kauffman had a game-high 183 yards and one TD for Enfield (1-2).

Berlin tops Avon
AVON, Sept. 21 2002 -- Berlin QB P.J. Sanzo threw two touchdown passes and completed 5 of 7 for 139 yards to lead Berlin (2-0). Matt Powell scored two touchdowns and rushed for 93 yards on 12 carries. Avon (0-2) was held to minus 18 yards rushing. Matt Friedhoff had a 20-yard interception return for the Falcons while QB Tony Casorio completed seven passes for 66 yards. Jared McNeill caught 4 passes for 19 yards.

NEW BRITAIN, Sept. 20 -- In a classic high school clash, No. 1 New Britain topped No. 3 Bloomfield, 42-35. Click here for full game coverage.

BRISTOL, Sept. 14, 2002  -- Tony Casorio came off the bench to complete 15-of-22 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown but St. Paul/Goodwin Tech outlasted Avon, 19-6 in the season opener for both teams Saturday night.

"We're a group of guys who like to play football," he said. "Everyone on this team likes to play football, hit hard and work hard." Friedhoff earned All-Nutmeg League honors as a defensive back.

St. Paul will be back
BRISTOL, May 19, 2003 -- St. Paul/Goodwin Tech will field a football team this fall but boosters need to raise $32,000 to keep the program going, the Hartford Courant reported.
